MURAKAMI Kaoru

2008 Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, BA Fine Art

2008 Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, BA Fine Art

My works are inspired by how fact and perception affect each other and how changeable they are – as seen in misunderstandings, preconceived assumptions, diversity of meanings, the impossibility of translation, and so on. At college, I learned the technique of converting three dimensions into two dimensions and creating a reversed image of the motif, from the process of copperplate making which converts the reversed relief into the original image, then I moved on to installation art and have been working on it. In recent years I have been scooping a person’s view from representations of their memory. “Bulb Cities” shows old postcards and written messages from the sender in light bulbs, and seeks the relationship between the ways their memories are dealt with and the observers. In many of my works including the above, I incorporate mechanical factors and use things related to electric lights.
